This was at the time of Earl's high school graduation. One family story says the suit was made for him at home. His sister Merle says he graduated from a private academy she believes was set up for students who had to work.

Earl and Marie in 1979, the year Earl died. Marie hated how she looked in this picture. One of her friends convinced her to dye her hair. But it is such a good picture of Earl that she didn't throw it out.
