Edna Mabel Holloway Gibson contracted tuberculosis after her husband died in 1920. She was sent to the sanitarium in San Angelo and her parents took care of her children. This is the first page of a letter Mary Candice Higgins Holloway wrote to her. While the grammar and spelling are by modern standards very poor, it was remarkable she was literate at all given the time she lived. It was written in pencil on pages torn from a school book of one of the children. Here is the transcribed letter.
